Salka Valka í The Washington Post

08/06 2022

Salka Valka kom nýverið út í nýrri enskri þýðingu. Útgefandi í Bandaríkjunum er bókaforlagið Archipelago Books.

The Washington Post birti á dögunum glimrandi fína umfjöllun um Sölku Völku. Bókin kom út fyrr á árinu í enskri þýðingu Philips Routhton, bæði í Bretlandi og í Bandaríkjunum. Útgáfunnar hafði verið beðið með talsverðri eftirvæntingu og það má segja að Salka Valka sé loksins búin að „meika það“ í Ameríku, en upphaflega ætlaði Halldór Laxness að skrifa Sölku sem kvikmyndahandrit fyrir Hollywood.

Hér að neðan er brot úr umfjöllun The Washington Post, en textann í heild má nálgast hér

“For modern readers, especially those who are aware of what a prosperous and enlightened tourist destination Iceland has become, “Salka Valka” is a wonderful exposure to Iceland’s troubled past and to the Icelandic sensibility that comes from making the best of things even when there isn’t much to be made. Laxness’s characters are rough and honest, and “Salka Valka” is one of the most empathetic portraits of a girl and a woman that I’ve read by a male author. This new translation is readable and compelling.”
